Hunger Poem

Greens and the Goddess

By Deeni Linton

Famished eyes survey
the refrigerator's transparencies
where miming tomatoes fool apples,
and dancing cucs entice the fruit's . . . passion.

My humor is elevated,
watching the show,
my hunger is not amused
rice, peas, asparagus (raw and steamed)
turkey, cheese, no
no, no, no!

Slamming the door shut,
with great force, pops open
the pantry . . . chips,
nuts, raisins, oatie O's
shades of boring brown.

Green, regal, enlightened, emerald
green will fortify, satisfy,
pacify this gnawing in my belly,
and growling in my head.

Quickly, hurry, back
to the cold, over there, cornered
light, fluffy, juicy, and sweet
waiting to be dressed
delicately, elegantly
then respectfully consumed
with grace.
