This chapbook contains a collection twenty-five sonnets, by Robert W. Birch, written in a variety of forms: Shakespearean (English), Spenserian, Petrarchan (Italian), and French. A three-page introduction explains the various structures of the sonnet, and the form of each of the twenty-five poems is identified.If you are not sure what a chapbook is, go here.
The definite restrictions for the fourteen-line sonnet present a challenge to the poet. The limited number of lines guarantee that the poem will neither be too long nor too short. Emphasis must be place on exactness and perfection of expression in set amount of space.
